Aujourd’hui ce sont deux mots: le trottoir (pavement) et la bordure du trottoir* (kerb). Note: in French”the kerb” is often referred as “le trottoir” rather than “la bordure du trottoir”.

Exemple 1: Certains cyclistes roulent sur les trottoirs parce que c’est plus sûr que la route. Some cyclists ride on the pavement because it’s safer than the road. 

Exemple 2: Il a heurté la bordure du trottoir en faisant marche arrière. He hit the kerb whilst reversing.
