Aujourd’hui ce sont les expressions verbales faire marche arrière (to reverse) et faire machine arrière (to back out).

Exemple 1 : Il a heurté une borne en faisant marche arrière. He reversed into a bollard. 

Exemple 2 : Les habitants ont gagné. Le gouvernement a fait machine arrière et a abandonné le projet de construction d’un nouvel aéroport. Residents won. The government backed out and gave up the project for a new airport.
